At our most recent visit, for an ear infection, she came out coughing with a red eye. During the exam, the vet repeatedly reached into her mouth, then knelt down and put his face directly next to hers. She was visibly anxious. We had to pull her back repeatedly, and she eventually turned to bite — she got my hand, because I’d put it in front of her. At no point did the vet explain what he was doing, ask us to help hold or distract her, or use any handling tools. Afterwards he told me it was my fault for not sedating her beforehand, referring to medication prescribed for long car journeys. Nobody there had ever suggested using it for appointments. We were charged four hundred and fourteen dollars for anti-inflammatory ear drops and a follow-up call, with a return visit in three weeks. My concern isn’t one bad moment. It’s that this practice doesn’t seem equipped to read an anxious animal, to coach owners through a stressful exam, or to handle a rescue dog with an unknown past. If your animal is nervous or reactive in any way, I’d look elsewhere.”
